When we initially think of the President of the United States, most people do not recognize that we are referring to presidents nominated under the U.S. Constitution. Everybody knows that the first president in that sense was George Washington. However, under the Articles of Confederation, the predecessor to the Constitution, also called for a president— although one with reduced powers. Eight men were selected to serve one-year terms as president under the Articles of Confederation and in November 1781, John Hanson—not Washington—became the first President of the United States in Congress Assembled, under the Articles of Confederation.
