Extreme Events Rock the Globe–and Much Worse Lies Ahead!

The Bible tells us that not only is extreme weather one of the signs of the end times, but also drought.  In fact, one of Isaiah’s judgements that were predicted appears to be drought:

‘The earth will be completely laid waste … the earth mourns and withers, the world fades and withers…'(Isa 24.3,4)

Unfortunately, drought is oftentimes one of the consequences for sin and disobedience (Deut 28.23,24) (Zech 14:17). Another form of judgement prophesied by Isaiah is extreme heat; heat severe enough to kill people.

‘Therefore … the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men are left’ (Isa 24.6)

Even the book of Revelation speaks of the same end time events, predicting extreme weather as part of God’s judgement upon the nations. It says that there will be fierce, scorching heat:

‘The fourth angel poured out his bowl upon the sun, and it was given to it to scorch men with fire. Men were scorched with fierce heat …’ (Rev 16.8,9)

A recent news article states:

California is parched, with 100 percent of the Golden State entrenched in drought conditions for the first time in 15 years, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM).

“With the expansion of D1 [moderate drought] across southeast California and southwest Arizona, this week marks the first time in the 15-year history of the USDM that 100 percent of California was in moderate to exceptional drought,” according to a statement by the Monitor, which is a joint effort by the National Drought Mitigation Center, NOAA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. drought observers.

Since March 25, the state has been under “abnormally dry” conditions, and just this week the Drought Monitor listed the entire state as experiencing a moderate drought.

Various parts of the state are feeling the California drought more than others. For instance, the city of Montague may run out of drinking water by the end of the summer, according to the Monitor; the city has asked residents to curtail outside watering at this time.

“This is the first time in over 80 years of water deliveries from the Montague Water Conservation District that this situation has occurred,” a statement from the Monitor reads.

Many growers in Shasta Valley and Big Springs — both part of Siskiyou County, in the northernmost part of California in the Shasta region — are struggling to water their fields.

The Monitor quotes an observer in Siskiyou County to illustrate the frustration felt by farmers: “Our snow pack is pathetic, rainfall is way below normal, (low) stream flows are running at 2-3 months ahead of normal depending on the area, well levels have dropped severely and many wells are dry in spring or have levels typical of late fall, surface water irrigation supplies are non-existent to extremely limited in many areas, and the situation is only getting worse daily (especially after 3 consecutive years of drought).”

In fact, California’s snowpack, or the snow that accumulates on mountaintops during the winter, is at less than one-third of its historical average, according to measurements from NASA’s Airborne Snow Observatory reported this month.

Winter is usually California’s wettest time of the year, but a high-pressure ridge offshore created a jet-stream pattern that sent Pacific storms heading for California north into the Pacific Northwest and Canada instead. The high-pressure system first appeared in December 2012 and lasted so long that meteorologists gave it a nickname: the Ridiculously Resilient Ridge.

Last year (2013) was California’s driest on record, according to the National Weather Service.  D News

Storms, Torrential Rain, Snow and Extreme Hail

When questioned about the end of the age, Jesus speaks of crazy weather patterns:

‘There will be … dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves’ (Luke 21.25)

There can be no other meaning of the root meaning of the Greek used in this verse but literally, sea and waves. And, the word ‘roaring’ stems from the Greek word ‘echo’ which means ‘to make a loud noise’. This could signify hurricanes and coastal flooding.  Also prophesied is torrential rain:

‘For the windows above (the floodgates of the heavens, NIV) are opened …’ (Isa 24.18)

‘Windows’ used in this context means the same as it does in Genesis 7.11, and denotes an opening, like a floodgate. Torrential rain, as experienced during the time of the flood, will also take place at the end of this age as one of God’s judgements on all the rebellious nations.

One of the other end times signs mentioned in the Bible is the Gog-Magog War. At some point, Iran, together with other Islamic nations, will invade Israel from the north (Ezekiel 38). But, just as God intervened to release Israel from the wrath of Pharaoh, He will also intervene to defend Israel from the invading armies. Clearly, the weather plays an important part in their (the enemy’s) defeat:

‘… I will rain on him (Gog) and on his troops … a torrential rain, with hailstones …’ (Ezekiel 38.22)

We know that God also uses hail to pour out His wrath on the world for their sin and disobedience. It is also one of God’s judgements upon the nations. Aside from extreme heat, there will also be severe snow storms and hail.

‘Or have you entered the storehouses of the snow … which I have reserved for the time of distress …’ (Job 38.22,23)

‘… and huge hailstones, about one hundred pounds each, came down from heaven upon men …’ (Rev 16.8,9,21)

God has, in times past, used weather events to bring nations to repentance, and He will do so again.  It would appear that these things are happening now. Since there is unquestionable Biblical evidence of God’s control of past and future weather, it is logical to assume that God is surely beginning to send the world a message through the many severe weather events we are experiencing and hearing about today.

Examples of Recent Severe Weather Events

Global reinsurer, Munich RE, confirmed that losses as a result of natural disaster for the first 9 months of 2011 totaled $310 billion. Coincidentally, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 2011 erupted with brand new weather records. NOAA announced that there were 12 different weather disasters (Above–NOAA CHART) and, that each disaster cost more than $1 billion at the time of the event. Previously, the record was nine in 2008. Events included wildfires, tornadoes, and blizzards. Tje NOAA states that the US has sustained 134 weather or climate disasters since 1980 where overall damages reached, or exceeded, $1 billion (including CPI adjustment to 2012). It is not surprising that scientists blame ‘an unlucky combination of global warming and freak chance’. According to NOAA data, it is noted that during the 1980’s the US alone averaged just 1 billion dollars a disaster per year, increasing to 3.8 per year by the 1990’s, and increasing to 4.6 per year in the next decade.

November 2013 will be remembered for apocalyptic weather across the globe. Super typhoon Haiyan hit the eastern Philippines with maximum sustained winds of 195 mph and gusts to 235 mph, which was one of the most powerful storms ever recorded. Fierce tornadoesetched a path of destruction across the US Midwest, with Washington being hit by winds of up to 200 mph. In the Italian island of Sardinia, cyclone Cleopatra dumped nearly 50 cm of rain in just 24 hours, which is half the amount it normally receives in a year.

Also of interest is the fact that global weather catastrophes track global warming. Despite recent disasters, there is a strong indication that these types of events peaked in the 1990’s. In fact, the first decade of the 21st century had fewer catastrophes, more than likely because the world climate shows a cooling trend.

Is there any doubt in your mind that God is speaking to the world through climate change and severe weather? Climate change is a subject that is debated. Some effects associated with climate change have certainly been observed of the last century:

• The world warmed by 0.8 degrees C

• Most glaciers retreated

• Sea level rose about 7 inches

• Water tables fell significantly (China: 1.5m/year, India: 1-3m/year)

But, just ‘who’ or ‘what’ is responsible for anthropological warming as proposed by the IPCC, or better, the natural causes?

• Global warming correlates well with solar irradiance change

• There is significant correlation between cloud cover (which affects temperature) and cosmic rays

• Temperature rise and CO2 increase seem weakly correlated

• CO2 rise (fall) often follows temperature increase (decrease)

• Temperature rise due to CO2 increase seems hard to detect

• Human activity contributes just 0.28% to greenhouse gases

• Glacier retreat commenced some 150 years before sharp CO2 rise

• Sea levels started rising some 100 years before sharp CO2 rise

• Since 2003 global temperatures have actually been falling

• Very long-term climate change may simply be due to emergence from the last ice-age

We must consider climate change as part of God’s end-time scenario! It does not matter whether it is HAARP modifying the weather or God, the fact remains that the Bible clearly tells us these things will happen in the end times. In fact, according to Bible prophecy, it makes more sense to keep our eyes open for severe ‘weather events’ rather than long-term ‘climate change’ since end-time events appear short-term in the Bible.

Using God’s Word, which is the Bible, we can say without a doubt that:

• God has used the weather to influence nations and individuals in the past.

• Bible prophecy tells us God will use severe weather events to speak to the nations at the end of this age.

• Prophetic signs are being fulfilled, and the current state of the world would suggest the end of this age is imminent.

But, there is another matter that is also highly debated–the increase in earthquakes.  I have come across some contradictory information from USGS and Time news!

According to USGS:

We continue to be asked by many people throughout the world if earthquakes are on the increase. Although it may seem that we are having more earthquakes, earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater have remained fairly constant.

A partial explanation may lie in the fact that in the last twenty years, we have definitely had an increase in the number of earthquakes we have been able to locate each year. This is because of the tremendous increase in the number of seismograph stations in the world and the many improvements in global communications. In 1931, there were about 350 stations operating in the world; today, there are more than 8,000 stations and the data now comes in rapidly from these stations by electronic mail, internet and satellite. This increase in the number of stations and the more timely receipt of data has allowed us and other seismological centers to locate earthquakes more rapidly and to locate many small earthquakes which were undetected in earlier years. The NEIC now locates about 20,000 earthquakes each year or approximately 50 per day. Also, because of the improvements in communications and the increased interest in the environment and natural disasters, the public now learns about more earthquakes.

According to long-term records (since about 1900), we expect about 17 major earthquakes (7.0 – 7.9) and one great earthquake (8.0 or above) in any given year.  USGS

But then a recent article in Time News clearly points out the opposite:

An unusually high number of tremors have shaken the state lately, leading some to point their fingers at the emerging hydraulic fracturing industry, though the real culprit might be a type of wastewater storage system

No strangers to nature’s fury, Oklahomans grow up accustomed scorching heat, blizzards, wrecking-ball thunderstorms and tornadoes. What they don’t see a lot of are earthquakes, which have been rattling the Sooner State with rare frequency of late — at least 115 earthquakes of varying intensities in the last week.

“You hear a loud ‘WAM!’ and you hear this loud rattle-rattle-rattle,” said Tracey Romberger, who lives near the center of this latest swarm of earthquakes between Oklahoma City and the town of Guthrie. She described the sound as “like somebody was dropping a bomb, or a cannon going off.”

The question on everyone’s mind is: why? The area has been seismically active since time immemorial but the latest swarm of earthquakes is unheard of. According to earthquake monitors EQ Charts, between 1990 and 2008 there were between 0 and 11 earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or greater in Oklahoma every year. In 2009 there were 49. In 2010 there were 180. In 2013 there were 291, and so far in 2014 there have been 59-plus and counting. More than a dozen notable earthquakes have shaken north-central Oklahoma in the past three days.

“It’s incredibly unusual,” said Austin Holland, a research seismologist with the Oklahoma Geologic Survey. “We’ve had swarms that are similar in nature but I don’t think we’ve had one with quite the numbers we’ve had.”  (A research seismologist states that it is ‘incredibly unusual’?)

State authorities are now trying to get the bottom of the unusual seismic activity. Holland is amassing resources and data to figure out what might be to blame, and the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, which oversees the oil and gas industry, has already proposed new testing and monitoring requirements for wells injected with drilling wastewater, which some have blamed for the increase in earthquakes. Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking“, involving explosions being set off underground, has also been blamed by some for the swarm.

God is using extreme weather as well as earthquakes not only to speak to, but also to judge the nations.  Why? Because it is obviously a very effective tool used by God to get the attention of the entire world!  Even more disturbing is the fact that this is only the beginning of the things to come. Much worse lies ahead, and people are not prepared. It will be unlike anything ever seen in all of history.
